REPAIRING SILVER CUTLERY
Solid silver cutlery can usually be repaired even when it is as much as 200 or more years old. A few caveats however. A lot depends on the condition of the silver piece. For instance, if handles are too ‘tired’ they may not withstand the work that would be needed.
The work is skilled, so it is important to use silver specialists. There are many types of fittings such as filled handles, hard soldered, or ivory, say, for knife blades, so each job presents its own challenges. One important element is that the correct temperature is used to prevent the silver handles from melting.
Sometimes the best and cheaper solution is to replace damaged items with matching pieces and the Vaults’ shops can help here too. They can also arrange for re-plating – an ice bucket for example may cost from about £60.
